Art Laboratory Berlin

Paola Yacoub präsentiert einen Überblick über unterschiedliche Werke, in erster Linie Fotografien und Montagen, die an verschiedenen Orten entstanden sind, beginnend im Libanon über Schweden und China bis hin zu Berlin. Allen Werken gemein ist ein Skeptizismus wie er in die bildende Kunst in den USA zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts eingeführt wurde.

In dem Fastfood-Restaurant „Beautiful Heart“ in Shenzhen, China, überträgt ein Flachbildschirm ununterbrochen Nachrichten sowie Unterhaltungsshows. Information wird hier zur Dekoration.

Die Besucher schauen von Zeit zu Zeit auf den Bildschirm, manchmal schauen sie auch nicht, selten sind sie dabei aufmerksam. Jeder ist hier allein mit seinem Blick. Jeder sieht etwas anderes als die anderen.

Eine dialogische Begegnung zwischen zwei Video-Clips desselben Bildschirms in demselben Fastfood-Restaurant zu unterschiedlichen Momenten ist von Paola Yacoub und Yao Zhiyan entstanden.

Diese Plasmabildschirme in Fastfood-Restaurants und Cafés zeigen die sozialen Bedingungen des zeitgenössischen Blicks.

Paola Yacoub hat ein Diplom an der Architectural Association School of Architecture in London gemacht und ist derzeit Doktorandin im Bereich Bildende Kunst am Goldsmith College in London. Neben anderen Veranstaltungen hat sie auf der Sao Paolo Biennale 2002 sowie der Venedig Biennale 2003 ausgestellt und war 2004/ 05 zusammen mit Michel Lasserre Teilnehmerin des DAAD Künstlerprogramms.
Sie lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.



Paola Yacoub will present a running thread through various works, mainly photographs and montages, produced in different geographical areas ranging from Southern Lebanon to Berlin via Sweden and China.

The common point is skepticism as it was introduced in visual arts in the U.S.A. at the beginning of the 20th century.

In a fast food restaurant 'Beautifull Heart' in Shenzhen, China, a flat screen continuously transmits news and entertainment channels. Information becomes like decoration.

One looks at the screen only from time to time, often not at all, and rarely with attention. Each one of us is alone in his gaze. We do not agree with the others on what we see.

A dialogical encounter between two video clips of the same screen in the same fast food restaurant but at different moments were made by Paola Yacoub and by Yao Zhiyan.

These plasma screens in fast food restaurants and cafés show the social modality of a contemporary gaze.

Paola Yacoub is a graduate of the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, and currently a PHD candidate in visual arts at Goldsmith's college, London. Among other venues she has exhibited in the 2002 Sao Paulo Biennale, the 2003 Venice Biennale and was part of the DAAD artists program in 2004/2005 in collaboration with Michel Lasserre. She lives and works in Berlin.
