in studio
in studio presents the most recent paintings made by rachel catton since her move to berlin in summer, 2004. these figurative works look like a new direction but in fact continue the development of themes previously explored in abstract works.
these are a series of portraits of people in a studio situation, and explore the theme of human experience as being both universal and specific. this time individuals are shown experiencing being painted in the artist’s space. feelings, aspects of relationships, personalities and physicalities are conveyed to show both the similar and different experiences of the common situation.
the format of the portrait is ancient, yet must continue to be relevant as long as humans are interested in each other, themselves and the human situation. we want to know and understand each other and ourselves. we see how appearance is marked by situation by looking at the way the marks of brush and paint construct the portraits.
the ‘in studio’situation depicted in the portraits is an experience doubly evoked for the viewer by their seeing this exhibition in an artists’ workspace, ‘galerie im atelier’.
